This assignment is designed to challenge you
to think of what it exactly is that you are doing. What is the
significance of commercial recreation to society? Why on earth would
someone major in it, and why would anyone outside of the major care? There are numerous
reasons that relate to the emotional, sentimental and economic benefits
or commercial recreation, conventions, events, hospitality and tourism.
In this paper you will explore and articulate some of those. |

Commercial recreation in the broadest sense
incorporates much more than hospitality. We've looked at several
different sub-sections of the field, and you can even apply commercial
recreation concepts to tourist/local attractions like aquariums, museums
and mega-malls. Even something like the California State Capitol
building becomes a tourist attraction with the appropriate target
market. But how do you justify it?
Research an area of commercial recreation of interest to you and provide
solid justification for this field of study. You can look at it from an
industry perspective (events, hospitality, tourism, etc.) or from a
thematic perspective (urban renewal, location-marketing, economic
benefits, psychological benefits, symbolism, etc.). Your paper can be
more concrete indicating how much money we get or how many jobs are
created from certain commercial recreation sectors. Or it can be more
conceptual, indicating the improved local culture and entertainment
options by finding articles that talk about increases in the number of
venues. |

You should reference at least 2 sources.
For this type of paper, you'll find newspapers and magazines to be helpful
as you are dealing with a current problem. You might also find books
on a specific area(s) of the industry that you are looking at. These may
give you a bit of history and some important facts. Sources such as
Wikipedia, etc., are not appropriate sources for this assignment.
You should prove that you have taken knowledge
gained in this course and that you have extended that knowledge base by
researching somewhat further into the given area.
The
length requirement is at least 600 words of actual text (two
pages), not including titles, reference lists, etc. and the paper should
be formatted in the manner described in the syllabus, using
correct APA style citations. (This is a very short paper. Make a
good, quick summary of what you're discussing - it's not meant to be a
long, drawn out assignment.) |
