GENERAL POINTS TO AN APA PAPER
- 1" inch on every side (standard on
most documents, just verify that it is only 1")
- Double spaced throughout entire document
- The Title Page, Abstract, Intro,
References, Tables and Figures all start on a new page
with a heading
- The Method, Results and Discussion
sections all continue in the document without a new page
- Running head throughout document on the
upper right-hand corner
- Page numbers on upper right-hand corner
with numbers starting on the title page
- Be sure to cite source of information
- Quote: If less than 40 words, use
"quotation marks"; if more than 40
words, block the quote without marks and indent
1/2" from the left margin and keep
double-spacing
-By one author:
1. Walker (2000) compared reaction times
2. In a recent study of reaction times (Walker,
2000)
-If more than two authors,
cite all authors once and in subsequent
citations, include only last name of
first author followed by et al.
TITLE PAGE
- Running Head will be across the top of
each page along with the page number, but will also be
appointed on the title page
- Ex. Running head: ABBREVIATED
TITLE (in caps)
- Title is centered and in the upper half of
the page. If more than one line, double-space.
- Author and University are also included.
ABSTRACT
- New section, new page.
"ABSTRACT" is centered and in all caps.
- There should be a running head and a page
number on the upper right-hand side
- No indent in the first paragraph
- A short summary of the paper in 120 words
or less.
INTRODUCTION
- New Section: Full title of the paper
centered on the top
- Will be the part of the paper of a
literature review, and setting up the reasons behind your
investigation.
- What was done before? What did it
say? How did it influence the current study?
- Set up your topic question and
state the hypothesis.
- Be sure to use citations.
METHOD
- Title of the section is centered .
- There are three subsections: Participants,
Apparatus, and Design and Procedures.
- Each subsection title is set flush
left and italicized. The text begins on
the next line and indented.
- What was the method of data collection?
Refer to your appendix: the data collection sheets.
- Should be concise
RESULTS
- Title of the section is centered
- What were the results of your data
analysis? Summarize your SPSS finding.
- Include frequencies or means and
the standard deviations.
- Means: M
- Frequency: f
- Standard Deviation: SD
- Not the place to discuss what the results
mean, simply state what they are.
DISCUSSION
- Title of the section is centered
- What do the results mean? Now is the time
to interpret the results and reincorporate the literature
and what you expected to find. Where should future
research go in investigating dreams? What are some of the
conclusions you can draw from your study?
APPENDICES
- Include your data sheets in the
appendices.
- Type the word Appendix followed by
the proper capital letter (A, B, C, etc.) if more
than one appendix. It should be centered at the
top of the page
REFERENCES
- New Section: Title for the section.
Citing your journal article:
Author, A. A., Author, B.B. (YYYY). Title of
article. Title
of Periodical, xx, xxx-xxx.
-Includes volume number and page
numbers of the article.
GRAPHS/FIGURES
- Showing your graphs and data.
- TABLES
- The title (Table 1) is
flush against the left margin and the
description is on the next line in
italics (double-spaced)
- GRAPHS/FIGURES
- All figure titles are on
the same figure caption page and is in
the paper immediately before all the
figures.
- Put a title on the page in
the top center, Figure Caption. Start the
captions flush left with them in
sequential order. The title of each
figure is: Figure #. The title is
followed by a description of the figure,
but not an interpretation.
