Conditional Admission

Sacramento State offers conditional admission to undergraduate and graduate programs to students who are academically qualified but have not met Sacramento State's English proficiency requirement at the time of application. These students are issued a conditional admission letter to Sacramento State and required to attend the university’s English Language Institute until they meet the language requirement (IELTS or TOEFL).

Eligibility for Undergraduate Conditional Admission

Applicants must meet the following Sacramento State international admission academic requirements:

First-Time Freshmen Applicants

  • 12 years elementary and secondary schooling with a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA), B grade average, or 80% average
  • High school diploma or Certificate of Completion of secondary education

Transfer Applicants

  • Undergraduate applicants who have attended a post-secondary institution must meet the minimum 2.4 GPA for all post-secondary work

How to Apply for Undergraduate Conditional Admission

Undergraduate students seeking conditional admission must submit the following:

  1. Completed conditional admission undergraduate application.
  2. All academic transcripts
  3. English Language Proficiency score report (TOEFL, IELTS)
  4. Applicant’s passport biographical information page
  5. Financial or bank statement showing proof of funds in the minimum amount of $24,200 (USD).
  6. Completed and signed Affidavit of Financial Support.

Eligibility for Graduate Conditional Admission

Due to the competitive nature of some graduate programs, not all may offer conditional admission. The following programs have accepted applicants through conditional admission, but this is not a definitive list, and may vary by term depending on the applicant pool:

  • Business Administration (International MBA)
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Music
  • Teaching English Speakers Other Languages (TESOL)

Please note that additional conditions may accompany your offer such as GRE or GMAT and/or course pre-requisites.

How to Apply for Graduate Conditional Admission

Graduate students seeking conditional admission must submit the following:

  1. Complete the Cal State Apply International Application.
  2. All academic transcripts, which include post-secondary transcripts from all colleges or universities attended, plus degree certificate. Please note that you must be meet the minimum GPA requirement of the program to even be considered for conditional admission.
  3. Any additional supporting documents that the graduate program may be requesting such as statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, etc.
  4. Applicant’s passport biographical information page
  5. Financial or bank statement showing proof of funds in the minimum amount of $24,200 (USD).
  6. Completed and signed Affidavit of Financial Support.
