Conditional Admission

Sacramento State offers conditional admission to undergraduate and graduate programs to students who are academically qualified but have not met Sacramento State's English proficiency requirement at the time of application. These students are issued a conditional admission letter to Sacramento State and required to attend the university’s English Language Institute or another Sacramento State-approved Intensive English Program until they meet the language requirement (IELTS or TOEFL).

Applicants must meet the following Sacramento State international admission academic requirements:

For First-time Freshmen:

  • 12 years Elementary and Secondary schooling with a 3.0 grade point average (G.P.A.), B grade average, or 80% average
  • High School Diploma or Certificate of Completion of secondary education

For Transfer Students:

  • Undergraduate applicants who have attended a post-secondary institution must meet the minimum 2.4 GPA for all post-secondary work.

Undergraduate students seeking conditional admission must submit the following:

  • Complete the online application at Cal State Apply International Application or submit the electronic PDF application
  • A copy of the applicant’s passport biographical information page
  • First-time freshmen students: Official secondary transcripts showing subjects marks received and graduation date.  If the applicant has not yet graduated, a transcript showing all completed work may be accepted.
  • Transfer students: Official transcripts with subjects and marks received from any colleges or universities attended.
  • A signed Affidavit of Financial Support, along with a bank statement showing proof of funds in the amount of $20,000. Both documents are required for an I-20 to be issued to the applicant if admission is offered.

Please note that the Engineering programs may also require GRE for full admission.

Graduate students seeking conditional admission must submit the following:

  • Complete the online application at Cal State Apply International Application 
  • A copy of the applicant’s passport.
  • Official undergraduate transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.
  • Additional documents required by the department such as statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, etc. Please consult the Office of Graduate Studies page for supplemental application requirements for each graduate program.
  • A signed Affidavit of Financial Support,
  • A signed Affidavit of Financial Support, along with a bank statement showing proof of funds in the amount of $20,000. Both documents are required for an I-20 to be issued to the applicant if admission is offered.
