Why is Health Insurance Required?

International students are required by federal law to maintain health insurance while studying the in the United States. In order to attend classes at Sac State, all F-1, J-1, and J-2 visa holders are required to hold health insurance through JCB Insurance Solutions.

What is covered?

Health insurance helps cover the expense of:

  • Visits to the doctor, hospital or urgent care
  • Unexpected illness and/or injuries
  • Medical evaluation
  • Repatriation
  • Medicine

How do I apply to waive the GeoBlue health insurance policy?

Only students funded by a sponsoring organization (e.g. SACM, CBIE) are eligible to apply for a waiver. To apply for a waiver, you must submit a valid financial guarantee to IPGE that covers the complete dates of the semester you are enrolling in.

How do I get my GeoBlue ID Card?

ID cards are electronic only! You will receive an email fromGeoBlue at the start of each semester notifying you to download your ID card. You may also set up an account at www.geobluestudents.com to access your ID card any time. Keep your electronic ID card with you at all times! You will need your card when you visit Student Health & Counseling Services (SHCS) or a doctor’s office, urgent care, or hospital.

How do I find a doctor?

Health services (SHCS) on campus is a convenient low-costoption for medical services and prescriptions. There is no copay or deductible at the health center. When you need off campus care, you should visit a PPO doctor in the Blue Cross Blue Shield network which will cost you less. Find a Blue Cross Blue Shield doctor:


1. Call (844) 268-2686 or go to www.geobluestudents.com
2. Select “Find a provider.”
3. Enter your member ID or choose Blue Card PPO Basic
4. Search by name, specialty, procedure
5. Enter your ZIP code for location and press “GO.”
