Information Security Assistant

Information/cyber security involves monitoring and analysis of potential and active threats targeting University systems, employees, and students. Threat monitoring requires the collection, maintenance, and presentation of data and asset inventories from a wide variety of tools and sources. The information security assistant will work under the direct supervision of information security staff in the maintenance of server, application, and web application vulnerability scans, collection of security-related metrics using a variety of tools, and processing of network and security events as appropriate. The Information Security Student Assistant will develop and maintain documentation and do other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist staff to analyze and drafts responses to RIAA notifications using existing ISO procedures.
  • Assist staff with vulnerability management scanning support
    • Managing assets
    • Performing network discovery scans
    • Debugging failed scans
    • Communication with technical managers regarding scan status
    • Collection and maintenance of vulnerability related metrics and reports

Assist staff with the collection and maintenance of security metrics & dashboards

  • Identification, documentation, collection, and communication of security metrics using a wide variety of security and management tools.

Assist staff with security event processing

  • DCMA/RIAA notice processing
  • Network log analysis
  • Analyzing/triage spam and phishing email
  • Email and web forensics
  • Network malware detection alert monitoring/response
  • Assist staff with Information Security Office (ISO) duties (see other duties below).

Other Duties:

  • Assists staff in maintaining the ISO web site.
  • Keep environment and equipment clean and orderly.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Have the background and ability to work confidentially and professionally.
  • Have a basic knowledge of TCP/IP networking, such as network addressing, ports, and protocols.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Have the ability to lift a minimum of 20 lbs.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Proficiency with programming/scripting using Python, Perl, Powershell, and common Unix utilities (i.e: grep/awk/sed), C #

Specific Qualifications:
  • Admission or registration as a CSU student.
  • As a Bridge Student Assistant, the student need not be registered as a student, but must have been registered as a CSU student the previous term and intends to register for the following term.
