Join Us and Sing!

choir photo Sacramento State's Voice Program empowers promising singers to develop as performers and educators equipped with the highest level of training. Graduates from the Voice Program have performed in Carnegie Hall, San Francisco Opera, and concert stages throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. They win international performance competitions and are active teachers in schools across the country. Our goal is to prepare you for success!

Every student at Sacramento State's School of Music receives comprehensive training in a challenging and supportive environment, housed on a 300-acre, park-like campus in the heart of Sacramento. Our students also enjoy access to a vibrant local artist community that includes the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera, Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra as well as the renowned professional musical theatre productions of California Musical Theatre's Music Circus.

Each year our Events Calendar is filled with diverse programming including solo degree recitals, masterclasses, choral concerts with our two chamber choirs, and semi- and fully-staged opera theatre productions. Our vocal performance classes include:

  • MUSC 142C, section 1 - Concert Choir - meets T/Th 3:00-4:15pm
  • MUSC 142C, section 2 - University Chorale - meets T/Th 1:30-2:45pm
  • MUSC 142O - Opera Theatre - meets MWF 12:00-1:15pm

The University Chorale is a highly-select group of 32-36 singers that performs challenging a cappella and accompanied choral literature reflecting a variety of styles and genres. This is an auditioned group. The Concert Choir is a larger ensemble open to any student with singing experience, regardless of major. This
ensemble performs annual seasonal concerts and sings a variety of a cappella and accompanied choral music.

New for Fall 2018

This fall we welcome Dr. Andrew Kreckmann, who is taking over the helm of the choral program from Dr. Donald Kendrick, who retired this spring after 33 years at Sac State. Our choir concerts are moving to St. John's Lutheran Church downtown, with a new earlier start time of 7:00 pm. Dr. Kreckmann comes to us from Henderson State University in Arkansas, where he he conducted several choirs, taught choral methods, basic conducting, advanced choral conducting, and oversaw the choral music education student interns.

Dr. Kreckmann previously served as Director of Choirs to over 250 students and five choirs at Morris Knolls High School in Rockaway, New Jersey, where he was also named Teacher of the Year in his final year there. Throughout his career, Dr. Kreckmann has also served as an accompanist, guest conductor, and clinician to numerous honor choirs throughout New Jersey, Delaware, Michigan, Texas, South Carolina, Alabama, and Arkansas. His choirs have toured across the US and Europe.
