Legislator expected to discuss housing crisis,
youth violence, public service at Sac State visit

Photo of Assembly member Caballero Assembly member Anna Caballero

State Assembly member Anna Caballero of Salinas, who is spearheading efforts in the Legislature to help Californians affected by the home mortgage crisis, and who heads a legislative special committee dealing with youth violence, will speak at Sacramento State Thursday, February 28 from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in the University Union’s Forest Suite. She is a guest of the university’s Serna Center.
Caballero is expected to address the housing crisis, youth violence, and the importance of youth public service. The event is free and the public is welcome. Students are encouraged to attend and faculty members in appropriate classes are encouraged bring their students.
Born to a family of copper miners, Caballero worked as an attorney for California Rural Legal Assistance, representing farm workers and unions fighting plant closures. She also served as executive director of Partners for Peace, an organization aimed at preventing gang violence and focusing on literacy, early childhood education, and providing services to families. After winning election to the Salinas City council and becoming the city’s first female mayor, she was elected to the Assembly in 2006.

She chairs the Assembly Select Committee on Youth Violence Prevention and the Committee on Local Government, and serves on the committees on Appropriations; Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy; Water, Parks and Wildlife, and the Joint Legislative Budget Committee.
