Bee Reporter Talks at CSUS About Hmong Community

"Hmong Community: Orphans of History," a program in honor of Asian Pacific Heritage Week, will feature a talk by Sacramento Bee reporter Stephen Magagnini at noon, Monday, April 2 in the University Union Hinde Auditorium at California State University, Sacramento.

In September, the Bee published a series about Hmong refugees living in Sacramento authored by Magagnini, who has covered ethnic affairs and race relations for the newspaper since 1994.

In March, Magagnini's series on the tough assimilation of Hmong refugees in Sacramento won an award for distinguished writing about diversity from the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

"Magagnini's extraordinary stories deliver a remarkable, caring insight into the inner workings and humanity of this culture," wrote the panel of top newspaper editors who selected "Orphans of History" to receive the award.

In 2000-01, Magagnini was honored by the Columbia Journalism School for his coverage of race and ethnicity in America, making him the first reporter to receive that prize two years in a row.
