Sacramento State News - California State University, Sacramento April 5, 2007

Concrete competition gives engineering students a practical test

Sacramento State’s civil engineering students are taking their concrete canoe to the water as they design and construct a new vessel in preparation for the 2007 American Society of Civil Engineers 20th annual Concrete Canoe Competition in San Jose.

The students will meet from 10 a.m. – noon, Saturday, April 7, at the University Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma. They are using last year’s canoe as they train and prepare for this year’s competition.

The regional engineering contest takes place at San Jose State University, April 26 – 28. The national finals will be hosted at the University of Washington on June 14 – 16.

Competition rules include new specifications each year. Civil engineering students began designing the concrete canoe in the fall of 2006, with construction beginning in the spring semester.

The engineering challenge gives students an opportunity to put principles learned in the classroom to practical use. In addition, the concrete canoe competition requires teamwork, creativity and stamina.

Sacramento State finished third overall in the 2006 Regional Mid-Pacific Conference Concrete Canoe Competition.
