Disability Awareness Day focuses on accessible technology

Disability Awareness Day will highlight accessible learning through technology from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., on Wednesday, May, 2, at various campus locations. Events will begin at 9 a.m. with demonstrations of assistive technology and a tour of the Services to Students with Disabilities High Tech Center located in the Academic Information Resource Center, Rooms 2010 and 2011.

A complete schedule of the day’s activities is available at

Examples of assistive technology include computer software that recognizes voice commands for those who are mobility impaired and screen readers that help navigate a keyboard for someone who is blind. Speech synthesis software can also be beneficial for those who have learning disabilities.

“These technological advancements can provide access for all,” says acting co-director of Services to Students with Disabilities Melissa Repa. “Our hope is these events will create dialogue in the campus community about accessible technology, universal design for learning, and accessibility of education for all students,” says Repa.

The event is co-hosted by Services to Students with Disabilities, TRIO Student Support Services, Center for Teaching and Learning, Academic Technology and Creative Services, and the University Library.
