Legislator to speak on the Darfur genocide at awards dinner

Assemblyman Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood) will discuss his call for California to divest from Sudan to help end atrocities being committed in Darfur at the 15th annual Africa Peace Awards Dinner at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 29 in the University Union Ballroom at Sacramento State. The dinner will bring to a close the annual Africa/Diaspora conference which begins on Thursday, April 27 at Sacramento State’s University Union.

Koretz is the author of AB 2941, which would prohibit California’s pension system from investing in any company doing business with the government of Sudan.

“I was born 10 years after the Holocaust and thought that nothing like it would ever be allowed to happen again,” Koretz said. “I’m shocked to see history repeating itself over and over and the international community not doing anything to stop this type of action.”

His speech, “Building a Sustainable Advocacy in California Against the Darfur Genocide,” is set to begin at 8 p.m.

The event will honor this year’s Peace Award recipients: Barry Loncke, retired Sacramento Superior Court Judge; Joy Ezeilo, Women’s Aid Collective, Nigeria; Isaac Albert, University of Ibadan, Nigeria; and Adam Sterling, Jason Miller and Adam Rosenthal of the UC Sudan Divestment Task Force.

Traditional African dancing and cuisine will also be a highlight of the event. A complete conference schedule is available at
Tickets are $35 and $15 extra for the VIP reception and are available at the Sacramento State Ticket Office at (916) 278-4323 or
