Get your laughs the Latino way

Original Latin Kings of Comedy alumnus Joey Medina will headline California State University, Sacramento’s Latino Comedy Festival at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 29 in the University Union Ballroom.

Also appearing, all the way from Travis Air Force Base, will be Dennis Gaxiola along with Southern California’s Gilbert Esquivel.

New York-born Medina brings years of comedic experience honed by touring the top comedy clubs across the country. He’s made numerous television appearances on such shows as “Roseanne,” the comedy show “Que Locos” and A&E’s “Evening at the Improv.” Medina’s 1998 CD Below the Belt has won numerous awards. Fellow comedian Paul Rodriguez handpicked Medina to tour with him on Rodriguez’s successful 2000 road tour.

Gaxiola has been performing his stand-up for the last 12 years while maintaining his day job as a technical sergeant in the Air Force. He plans to turn it on full-time upon his retirement next year from the military, pursuing a career in acting and writing as well as his comedy. He has appeared on television’s “Apollo Comedy Hour,” “Friday Night Videos,” “Comic View” and “Que Locos.”

Esquivel finds some of his humor from his early years as a gangbanger. The son of migrant farm workers, he now travels the country performing at comedy clubs including the Apollo Theater and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. He also makes an appearance on the Latino Kings of Comedy CD.

Tickets are $10 general, $7 CSUS students and are available at the CSUS Ticket Office (916) 274-4323 and at
