Conference to explore artistic portrayals of gender identities

Scholars from universities across California will gather to speak on gender norms throughout time and culture in the Department of Humanities and Religious Studies’ first Interdisciplinary Spring Conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 7 in the University Union Forest Suite.

The conference, “Artful Strategies and Necessary Risks: Negotiating Gender and Identity across Cultures and Disciplines,” will examine how different countries over generations respond to individuals who seek a sense of self outside the social parameters.

University of Southern California professor Annapurna Devi Pandey will compare women, work and empowerment in the United States and India in a panel discussion at 9:10 a.m. Experts from Sacramento State and UC Davis will discuss performing and preserving identity in early and pre-modern texts at 10:15 a.m.

Gender roles during wars throughout history also will be examined in a panel at 12:20 p.m., where Sacramento State professor Mona Siegel will discuss feminism and pacifism in World War I. Scandalous transgressions and how they are portrayed through art will be the topic for the final panel at 3:05 p.m. For a complete conference schedule visit
