Honk! flies south for the summer

California State University, Sacramento’s production of Honk! – the family friendly musical featuring song, dance and puppetry based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling” – will wing its way to the isle of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands this summer.

Fifteen CSUS students involved with the campus production of last November and December will be performing the play as a benefit for Tortola’s Community Agency on Drugs and Addiction June 18 to 20 and 25 to 27. No University funds are being used for the trip thanks to support from American Airlines and the island’s Stock Pot Theater, where the show will be performed. The arrangements were made through one of the cast members with relatives on the island.

The CSUS students will present the play in cooperation with students from British Virgin Islands High School.

Honk! tells the tale of Ugly, a different sort of duckling that honks instead of quacks. Born into a family of rivalrous, mean-spirited siblings with an unforgiving father, Drake, Ugly is only loved by his mother, Ida. Ugly’s life is a constant conflict.

The barnyard oddball eventually receives a self-serving invitation to dine from the farm cat, and narrowly escapes being the meal’s main course. Ugly becomes lost in his race to get away, and his quest to be reunited with Ida sets him on a saga of discovery. During the journey home, Ugly encounters protective geese, a beautiful swan and wise frogs. The trip teaches him about the good in being unique. The characters, and audience, are treated to a lesson about what’s really important in life.

The CSUS students will depart June 12 and return June 28.
