Professor’s film named an Emmy winner

Sacramento State Professor Emeritus Satsuki Ina has been awarded an Emmy for her film From a Silk Cocoon.

The award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, San Francisco/Northern California Chapter was presented at a May 20 ceremony in San Francisco. In addition to executive producer Ina, Sacramento State alumnus and co-director/editor Stephen Holsapple, was honored for Specialty Historical/Cultural Program along with Kim Ina and Emery Clay III.

From a Silk Cocoon tells the story of Ina’s parents, who renounced their American citizenship while interned at separate camps during World War II. Sacramento State alumni and students appeared in the film, which debuted in Sacramento, aired on KVIE and was screened at Sacramento State last fall. It also received a Best Director award from the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival.

Next month, Ina will screen it at the Japanese Association of Migration Studies conference in Nagoya and will speak at the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies.

While there she will also donate the silk dresses and kimonos that were made for her mother as a “silk girl” at the 1939-40 World's Fair in San Francisco to the Komagane Silk Museum in Nagano-ken. The museum is planning a special exhibit about the Japanese silk trade and World War II, based on Ina mother's story.

For more information contact Ina at (415) 566-3487. Media assistance is available by contacting the Sacramento State public affairs office at (916) 278-6156.
