State Fair exhibit sheds
light on people of Tibet

Glimpses into the everyday lives of the people of Tibet are on display in “Folkways of Tibet,” now showing at the California State Fair. The exhibit is in Exhibit Hall 8 at Cal Expo during fair hours, closing Sept. 5.

The show is made possible by a joint effort of Sacramento State’s College of Continuing Education and Sacramento State alumna Winnie Leung, the World Trade Investment Corporation and Horizon Consulting. It coincides with China’s celebration of Tibet’s 40th anniversary as the Autonomous Region of China.

“Folkways of Tibet” features more than a hundred artifacts from the Beijing Nationalities Museum. The artifacts and displays depict the customs of the Tibetan people: how they live, what they eat and wear, their transportation and culture. It includes a full-size display representing the tent living quarters of a nomadic family, colorful costumes, masks and antiquities. Large-scale photos of Tibetan people line the walls of the hall along with informational posters describing location, history and societal changes.

The show is free with paid fair admission.
