Students play fairy godmothers
for Cinderella’s Closet

Five Sacramento State students are doing their best to make underprivileged girls feel like princesses when prom night comes.
The students are arranging a formal dress drive to benefit Cinderella’s Closet, a nationwide organization that provides free dresses, shoes and accessories to underprivileged high school girls so they may attend their prom or other high school formal. The drive will be conducted beginning Monday, Nov. 26, and continue through Saturday, Dec. 1. Designated dress collection bins can be found in the University Union near Java City, the Library circulation desk, and the River Front Center. The students will also be on hand to collect dresses in the Library breezeway from 4 to 6 p.m. during the week, as well as 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and Thursday.

Dresses may also be dropped off at the Second Hand Rose Resale Boutique, located at 1120 Fulton Avenue in Sacramento.
The project originated from an assignment in professor Nick Trujillo’s Communication Studies 105, Small Group Communications class. “Students must complete a major project, and while this is not a service-learning class, I encourage students to do something that will help others,” Trujillo says. “I’m very impressed with the students who are working on the dress drive. They will make a difference in the lives of many girls who will remember their high school formals fondly.”
DiAnne Armstrong, one of the students working on the project, says the timing of the dress drive was no accident. “We’re hoping when women go home for Thanksgiving, they’ll look through their closets and find prom dresses to donate.”
Armstrong says that once the dresses are collected, they’ll be given to the Second Hand Rose Boutique. “After that, gift certificates are given to girls who qualify for financial aid and have at least a 2.5 GPA from 16 area high schools,” she says. “The girls will be given gift certificates to use at the boutique.” The dresses, shoes and accessories are in what’s known as the “Glass Slipper” room.
