Honors students get living lessons from seniors

Students in Sacramento State’s Honors Program will get a first-hand education on life-long learning when they visit the Hart Senior Center from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The group of 60 students are taking part in an intergenerational celebration as part of their course “Education, Self-Examination and Living.” During their course work, the students have explored ideas of education and self-development by reading Confucius, Plato, Virginia Woolf and Gandhi.

Now they’ll be getting lessons from those who have truly been through the school of life. “The students are eager to step outside the texts and meet members of the Hart Senior Center who can offer personal experiences about life-long learning,” says Brendan McVeigh, Sacramento State’s community partnerships coordinator.

“The senior center exchange encourages students to critically reflect on the ideas and values of education posed by different generations, thinkers and cultures,” says Sacramento State professor Vanessa Arnaud.

During the celebration, students and seniors will talk, share music, have lunch and decorate the center for the holiday season.

The University’s honors program consists of a unique general education curriculum designed to provide academically enriched and intellectually stimulating experiences for a small group of selected students.
