Get on the ‘write’ track

Aspiring writers can pick up the tips and tricks of the trade at the 17th annual Writers Conference from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 in the University Union at California State University, Sacramento.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library and the University Library.

Author Karen Joy Fowler will give the keynote address at 9 a.m. She is the author of two story collections and three novels, one of which, Sister Noon, was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner award. Her first novel, Sarah Canary, won the Commonwealth Award for the best first novel by a Californian.

Three sets of workshops will follow focusing on such topics as fiction writing, writing for children, interviewing techniques, getting published, research tips and how to find an agent.

Lunch will feature an awards presentation for the winners of this year’s Focus on Writers contest.

The deadline to register is Nov. 30. Tuition for the conference is $35 for Friends of the Library members, $40 for non-members and $45 at the door. Lunch is included. For more information, call (916) 264-2880.
