Schoolchildren to Preview Puppet/Music Show

Up to 600 Sacramento area schoolchildren will get a sneak peak at the popular family concert series presentation Niam: Portrait of a Gnome at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., Friday, April 7 in the Music Recital Hall at California State University, Sacramento.

Students from Sacramento elementary schools Phoebe Hearst and St. Francis and Sacramento Waldorf in Fair Oaks will attend the 9:30 a.m. performance. Students from Sacramento elementary schools Caleb Greenwood, St. Francis, Leonardo da Vinci, Kaseberg Elementary in Roseville and Maxwell Elementary in Colusa County will attend the 11 a.m. performance.

The theatrical performance includes illuminated puppetry by Richard Bay Puppets, the 70-piece CSUS Symphony Orchestra and Sacramento Black Art of Dance. In Niam, artists perform to "Pictures at an Exhibition" by composer Modest Mussorgsky. CSUS professor Deborah Pittman's fairy tale-like story is read throughout the presentation by CSUS professor Claudia Kitka.

A free public performance of Niam, as part of the eighth annual Festival of the Arts, will be at 1 and 3 p.m., Sunday, April 9 in the Musical Recital Hall.
