Did You Know?
The hornet was selected as the University’s mascot in 1947, the same year the campus’ colors were chosen, and the University’s first year in existence. The nickname “Herky” is believed to be short for “Hercules.”

Philanthropists, business leader honored at commencement
The University honored three distinguished community members at two commencement ceremonies on May 26 at Arco Arena. Roger Valine received an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters, and William and Margaret Campbell were presented with the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service.

Outstanding students recognized with Deans’ Awards
Seven students were honored with Deans’ Awards for their exemplary work in the classroom. The students, one from each of Sacramento State’s colleges, were honored for outstanding achievement with the annual awards, given during an April 26 dinner. One of the recipients, Allison Williams, also received the President’s Medallion at the College of Business Administration commencement ceremony.

Rec Center, residence hall get Trustee approval
The California State University Board of Trustees has given the go-ahead for Sacramento State to begin construction on a new residence hall and a Recreation and Wellness Center.


Campus unveils new Tea Room and Garden
Two weeks of special events and tours will mark the opening of Sac State’s new Sokiku Nakatani Tea Room and Garden, one of just a handful of tea rooms on a U.S. campus. There will be tea ceremonies on Saturday, June 9 and Wednesday, June 13, and additional tea ceremonies and tours are being scheduled throughout the coming months.

Alumni art on display
Summer does not mark the conclusion of exhibitions at Sacramento State’s Art Department. Alumni artists will display their artwork for public viewing at the campus’ Else Gallery during CAMS 6 (Chapter Annual Membership Show), the sixth annual juried membership exhibition from the Art Chapter of the Sacramento State Alumni Association. The show runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, June 4-27, and includes an artists’ reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 9.

Students send (musical) notes from camp
Lyrical sounds of all different kinds will fill the air at Sac State this summer when the music department offers students young and old a chance to lead the band, swing with jazz greats or receive coaching in classical chamber music during its annual music camps. The public, too, will get a chance to enjoy some of the music.


Golfers earn all-independent awards
Sac State freshman Grant Norton was named to the 2007 all-independent men’s golf first team and was joined by sophomore Scott DeBorba on the all-newcomer team. Norton was one of just five golfers named to the first team.

Former Hornets named to MPSF anniversary team
Former Sac State players Jamel Mitchell and Kevin Baena were both named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) 15th Anniversary Men’s Soccer Team, it was announced by the conference.

Rowers receive region honors
For the second straight year, senior rower Janine LaCrosse earned second team all-West Region honors while juniors Aleisha DeCindis and Krista Hill were both recipients of the National Scholar Athlete Award, it was announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
