Teachers to Get Much Deserved Recognition

California State University, Sacramento will honor alumni teachers with a CSU Year of the Teacher reception from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 1 in the University Union Ballroom.

The reception, co-hosted by President Donald R. Gerth and College of Education acting Dean Maurice Poe, will honor Patty Waggoner-Yamat and other alumni teachers. Alumni and the public are invited to the free reception and are asked to reserve space by Oct. 27 by calling the College of Education at 278-4695.

Waggoner-Yamat, a College Greens resident, was named the CSUS Alumni Teacher of the Year for being an outstanding representative of the teaching profession. She has taught in the Washington Unified School District for 38 years, most recently at Bryte Elementary School. "Teaching is sometimes a career where teachers feel unappreciated and undervalued," says Poe. "This is the College of Education's opportunity to let our alumni know that we value what they do out there every day."

The Year of the Teacher is designed to heighten awareness of the importance of quality teachers and the major role the CSU system plays in teacher education. CSUS has one of the largest and most innovative teacher education programs in the state.
