Project Overview

Project PASS is a comprehensive, 5 year, NSF funded program designed to increase the retention and graduation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students graduating from Sacramento State.  Project PASS targets student success in “gateway” math and science courses and implements a variety of research based strategies for improving student learning and retention.  The PASS grant is centered around three components:

Early Intervention System Component

Identifies "at risk" students in gateway STEM courses and requires these students to participate in a specific set of academic and nonacademic interventions

  • Notification, intervention and follow up advising for “at risk” students
  • At risk students will participate in new and existing academic (Peer Assisted Learning, PAL sections, Commit to Study, Tutoring etc.) and non-academic (Financial Aid, Student Health, Psychological Counseling, etc.) programs and services
  • Summer workshops will be provided for incoming students
  • The project will track the effectiveness of advising and intervention services

Peer Assisted Learning Component

Peer-Assisted Learning improves student success in gateway STEM courses by employing a Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) model of supplemental instruction.

PALs enroll a maximum of 15 students per section, and are led by a trained PAL Facilitator who was successful in the course, is recommended by the faculty, and has the specific personal qualities we have determined allow for the best facilitation.  

PAL content is created by discipline faculty, and the Facilitators do not teach or tutor; rather, they use established techniques of questioning and content scaffolding to build student confidence and establish solid foundations of content knowledge.

Commit to Study

Commit to Study Component

Motivates STEM students to achieve the University’s recommended three hours of study per one unit of math and science coursework

  • Media campaign to raise awareness of study hours needed for success
  • Creation of STEM study space for group and individual use
  • Study skills workshops, worksheets, and tutorials for science students
  • Faculty workshops focused on how incorporating study skills instruction in their classes
