What is the Renaissance Society?
The Renaissance Society is a participatory "Center for Lifelong Learning." Members choose to study topics proposed by their peers who lead the seminars. These subjects constantly evolve from the interests of the members. The goals of the Society are to provide opportunities for continued learning for older adults and to foster creative expression for members.
Who may join?
Membership is open to all older adults who wish to engage in participatory learning. No college degree is required for membership, just the wisdom that comes with experience and the curiosity that sustains interest in learning. The annual membership fee covers the courses offered during the year.
What is the membership fee?
The membership fee is $100 per member for an academic year, from July 1 to June 30. You can sign up to become a member either online, using a credit card, or with a paper form and a check.
Where do we meet?
Friday and Saturday seminars are held on the campus of California State University, Sacramento. Also, there are off-campus seminars that are held at different locations.
When do we meet?
On Fridays, there are various seminars from morning through the afternoon on the CSUS campus. Some are one-time or drop-in and others last through a semester. Following the Friday seminars each week, a Forum is held featuring invited speakers of note who share their views with members, followed by lively question-and-answer sessions. We also have some Saturday seminars on campus. Other seminars are held off-campus at various times in the community.
What about parking?
An optional $20 fee provides members with parking on campus on Fridays and Saturdays for one year. This fee is paid when you sign up for membership. Go to the Parking page for details on where you can park.
What about public transportation?
Various buses and light rail serve the campus. Check out the Parking page for links to Regional Transit and the CSUS Hornet Shuttle.
May I use the Library?
You can get an annual Library card (July through June) for $10. That fee can be paid during membership signup, either online or with the paper form. To get the card, go to the Library desk and show your ID; the desk has a list of current members who have paid the fee. You can also just go to the Library desk and pay the $10 (using a payment card you can purchase near the desk). This card entitles you to all Library privileges, to borrow books for three weeks and audiotapes from the Library Media Center for one week. Videotapes may be watched only on the monitors at the Center. If you need to have a videotape shown in your seminar, call the Renaissance Society office at (916) 278-7834 to make the necessary arrangements. Please allow at least two weeks lead time.
May I use The Well?
The Well is the CSUS fitness center. It has a huge amount of very current fitness machines and weight equipment and also offers classes such as yoga, spinning and Zumba. Renaissance members can join (we are an Associated Campus Program). Visit and get the details. You will pay a monthly fee of about $32.
How do I join?
There are two ways to join: online, paying with a credit card, or with a paper form and a check. Visit the Membership page for link to online membership signup and also a paper form that you can download, print out and mail to the Renaissance Office with your check. You can also visit the Renaissance Office, CSUS, Adams Building, Room 106, or call (916) 278-7834 during office hours Monday-Thursday 9:30 a.m.-12 noon, and Friday, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
How do I register for a seminar?
There are three ways to sign up for seminars: Online or by contacting the seminar leader once the new semester schedule is released a few weeks before the semester starts. Get more information on the Seminars page. You can also register at the Rendezvous, which is usually held a week or two before the start of each semester. Attending Rendezvous allows you to talk to the various seminar leaders if you would like more information about the seminars.
