Winter Orientation

As a new student, you have the opportunity to continue your education in an environment rich with opportunity. Since every university/college is different, your first step is to attend Orientation. Orientation is required for all new students. Students cannot register for classes until they attend Orientation.

Orientation takes place in early January. Reservations for Orientation will begin November 1, 2017. The deadline to register for Orientation is November 30, 2017.

Child Care 

Students who are in need of child care (ages 1-5 years) during Orientation may arrange for free child care from the ASI Children's Center. This is based on space availability and requests for care should be made no later than December 15, 2017. The Center will be closed 12/18/17 - 1/2/18 so submit your request in early December. For arrangements, call ASI Children's Center at (916) 278-6216. 

Winter 2018 Orientation will take place January 3-5, 8-10.

Reservations for Orientation will begin on November 1, 2017.
The deadline to register for Orientation is November 30, 2017.

#Liberal Studies is a major preparing students for elementary education teaching. IT IS NOT A LIBERAL ARTS DEGREE.

Students will check in for Orientation at the University Union and are expected to attend all sessions. Students who arrive after 9:00am will be required to reschedule their session. Please arrive on time. (Click here to see Parent Schedule.)

Fees for Orientation cover the cost of staffing, parking, refreshments and program materials. Financial aid does not apply to Orientation fees.

Refunds can be given only if you request a cancellation in writing at least two business days in advance of your assigned date. You can email us your written cancellation to Refunds will be processed once a month. For changes in your reservations, call (916) 278-7841.

New students enrolling in Spring 2018 will attend Orientation in early January 2018. Orientation sessions are based on the student's major. Reservations are processed online via your MySacState account.  Students who do not attend Orientation will not be permitted to enroll this Spring.

Step One: Accept Admissions

Step Two: Before you can register for Orientation, Admissions will need to verify information regarding transcripts . For details, check the Admissions "I have been Admitted" page.

Step Three: Log into MySacState

Step Four: Click STUDENT CENTER in the center of the page.

Step Five: Click New Student Orientation on the lower left side of the page and follow the directions.

Orientation sessions are based on the student's major. If a student’s major of interest has changed since he or she applied to Sac State, the student should select an orientation date based on his or her new major of interest. If a student needs to officially change their major, he or she can discuss that with an advisor during major advising.

Step Six: Confirm your reservation, and make note of how to pay your orientation fee and print your parking permit. Students will receive an email confirmation of their reservation.

Sign-Up for Orientation at My Sac State

Pay online (see CashNet below) OR by sending a check or money order with a copy of your confirmation page to: Sacramento State, New Student Orientation, 6000 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95819. Make checks/money orders payable to Sacramento State. We cannot accept cash or credit cards the day of your Orientation. Cash can be accepted at the Bursar's Office prior to your Orientation session. To confirm your orientation date, orientation fees are due within seven days of placing your reservation.

Orientation check-in begins promptly at 7:45am in the University Union. Be sure to bring your confirmation letter, unofficial transcripts and your parking permit.

Check-out the library quad during the first two weeks of classes. Many student clubs and organizations will be looking for new members.

Below is a list of what students should do following Orientation:

Register for Classes - Students register for classes during Orientation. Late registration begins January 10-18, 2018.

Pay Registration Fees - After registering for classes, students must visit their My Sac State account to check their Student Center for account information. Students MUST pay their registration fees during the period indicated. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of registered classes. If students filed for financial aid (loans, grants, work-study), they should contact Financial Aid or visit their website for additional information. Students can check their award status in My Sac State.

Purchase a Parking Permit - Parking permits can be purchased at an additional charge when paying registration fees. Students can also purchase parking permits at the Bursar's Office in Lassen Hall or the University Transportation & Parking Services (UTAPS) office in Folsom Hall. Daily passes can be purchased in designated parking lots for $6. For Residence Hall permits, call UTAPS at (916) 278-7275. For information about Permits for Students with Disabilities call Services for Students with Disabilities (SSWD) at (916) 278-6955. Semester parking permits are currently $174.

Locate and Arrange for Housing - Looking for a convenient place to live in Sacramento? There are many options. Students can live in our residence halls, live in campus affiliated apartments (Upper Eastside Lofts) or get information on roommates and local apartments. For details, contact Housing & Residential Life at (916) 278-6655.

Make Sure You Have a OneCard Student ID - If you didn’t get your student ID card during Orientation, visit the Bursar's office in Lassen Hall.

Submit Final Transcripts - All new students are required to submit their final official transcripts no later than January 11, 2018. This requirement includes submission of any AP scores. Mail to Enrollment Services, 6000 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95819.

Purchase Textbooks and Technology - Students can purchase textbooks online through the Hornet Bookstore. In addition, students can purchase computers and software at special academic prices through the Hornet Bookstore Computer department. Present Proof of Immunization - All students born after January 1, 1957, are required to show proof of immunity to measles and rubella. Students 18 years and younger are required to show proof of immunization against hepatitis B. Students should present copies of their immunization records to the Sac State Health Center. Verifications of immunity will be requested during the first semester. Failure to comply with this requirement will prevent students from registering in future semesters.

Explore On-Campus Employment - There are a variety of on-campus jobs available for students who wish to earn money and gain valuable experience. Visit the Career Center website and the Student Employment website for job listings.

Schedule a Library tour – The Sacramento State Library has many resources and study spaces available for students. Check it out!

Find upcoming Campus Events using the Sac State Events Calendar – Research shows that students who get involved outside the classroom do better inside the classroom. Sac State has literally hundreds of ways for you to get involved—from student clubs and organizations and intramural sports to outdoor fun through PEAK adventures and getting fit at The WELL. There’s something for every student—reach out, and engage with the campus community!
