California Smile Survey (Smile)

The California Smile Survey project is funded by the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) Office of Oral Health in coordination with the California Department of Education, and is being implemented by Public Health Survey Research Program (PHSRP).   The California Smile Survey is a statewide oral health assessment of third grade students will be conducted in California school districts during the 2018–19 school year.  The purpose of the survey is to determine the oral health status of third grade children in California. This will help the Office of Oral Health make informed decisions as to how best to prevent oral disease in children, and will establish a new baseline for the oral health indicators in the California Oral Health State Plan.  The goals are to assess the prevalence of tooth decay (caries/cavities) and untreated tooth decay among third grade children.
