Sac State offers limited new student admission

Sacramento State will be able to enroll approximately 1,400 more new students in Spring 2011 than previously anticipated.

The California State University announced today that $106 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) will allow the CSU to admit a limited number of new students and partially restore course sections and student services for the upcoming winter and spring terms.

Sacramento State’s share of the one-time funding is $6.6 million, and the University will be able to enroll approximately 1,400 more new students than previously anticipated for the Spring 2011 semester.

“The one-time funding boost is excellent news for many prospective Sacramento State students,” Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez says. “However, I caution that much uncertainty remains because we still do not know what the final state budget will look like in terms of funding for the CSU.”

The funding will also allow the University to increase the number of course sections necessary to support the augmented spring enrollment, as well as expand student services to serve the increased influx of students.

Staff will make admission decisions for Spring 2011 after the Sept. 27 application deadline.

While the final round of stimulus funding will allow Sacramento State to admit a portion of the students who applied, the number of applications will continue to exceed the University’s funded capacity. More than 2,800 prospective students have applied for spring admission to Sacramento State. The CSU has seen massive cuts in state support over the last two years and was forced to address the reduction in funding through the use of employee furloughs, enrollment cuts and increased student fees.

The governor's proposed budget includes the first restoration of state funding to the CSU since 2007 with $305 million to restore a one-time cut and an additional $60.6 million to fund further enrollment expansion.
