Testing Accommodations: Ensuring Accessibility and Fairness in Testing

Testing accommodations are essential to ensure that individuals with disabilities have equal access to testing. By providing accommodations, we can ensure that everyone has equal opportunity to succeed and demonstrate their knowledge and skills. In this session participates will learn how to ensure that testing accommodations are implemented effectively, as well as create clear polices and processes. This includes identifying the types of accommodations that are available, determine eligibility for accommodations, and providing instructions to individuals on how to request accommodations. As testing professionals, it is our responsibility to ensure that testing accommodations are available and implemented effectively to create an accessible and fair testing environment.

Universal Design for Testing: Designing Empathy—A Guide to Inclusive Testing

This presentation is designed for anyone interested in applying the universal design principles to make testing more compatible with broad student participation. Participants will examine their role in providing equal access and opportunities to students regardless of physical, mental, or other constraints. This presentation is not about appealing to personal preferences, but strives to find ways to attain equal access for the greatest number of examinees without compromising the test. Participants will gain a working knowledge of Universal Design for Testing, including how individual variability plays out in different educational environments; strategies for adopting a universal-design attitude; tips, guidelines, and techniques for preparing the environment; as well as strategies for making test content and output more accessible. Participants will analyze testing center policies and procedures and apply strategies that provide students with the best opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

Managing a Test Center: Best Practices for Handling Common Issues

Managing a test center involves a range of responsibilities, from scheduling and staffing to ensuring the security and accessibility of exams. This session will provide insights into best practices for managing a test center, with a focus on handling common issues that may arise, such as late exam delivery, staffing issues, and accessibility concerns. Attendees will learn how to effectively manage a test center by applying best practices to a range of situations.

Converting Last-Minute Exams: Free Assistive Technology Tools to the Rescue!

As an academic testing professional, it can be challenging to manage the last-minute submission of exams from professors. This session will focus on how to use free assistive technology tools to quickly convert exams from various formats into accessible formats. Attendees will learn about free tools available online that can be used to convert exams quickly and easily, without the need for expensive software or hardware.

Accessible Academic Testing is a Disability Civil Right

Accessibility is a fundamental civil rights issue. In the realm of academic testing, ensuring accessibility is not only crucial for disabled individuals to equally access and participate in educational opportunities, but is legally required for compliance. This session will provide a quick snapshot of the legal and historical events that built the foundation for accessibility in academic testing, including key legislation such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). By understanding the historical framework behind our work, participants will gain deeper insights into their responsibilities as testing professionals. In addition, through learning more about inclusive and universal best practices, we can reduce discriminatory testing practices that pose unnecessary barriers for disabled test takers. Participants will leave better equipped with understanding their roles and responsibilities toward legal compliance with an increased appreciation for understanding the fundamental rights of disabled individuals. They will gain transferable tools for implementing increased accessibility and inclusivity with their own testing practices for an improved testing environment for all their test takers.

AI vs Human Proctoring: Exploring the Benefits and Challenges for Accessible Testing

Join us for an engaging discussion at the Northern California Accessible Proctoring Conference as we delve into the topic of AI vs Human Proctoring. This session will explore the advantages and challenges of using AI technology and human proctors in accessible testing environments. We will examine the capabilities and limitations of each approach, discuss ethical considerations, and explore strategies for achieving a balance between technology and human intervention. Whether you are a testing professional, disability services coordinator, or advocate for accessible testing, this session will provide valuable insights into leveraging technology while ensuring an inclusive and secure testing experience for all.
