Student Research Center Workshops

Starting in fall 2018, the Student Research Center (SRC) will offer a series of workshops and informational sessions designed to support diverse undergraduate and graduate students engaged in mentored research and creative activity experiences.

Space is limited and is first come, first served. Please bring your OneCard to check in.

April 2019 

  1. Introduction to Research & Creative Activities

    • Attend this information session to learn about a) what it means to engage in research and creative activities, and b) the benefits of participating in a high-impact practice. *Appropriate for undergraduate students. 
  2. How to Write an Effective Email 
    • April 17, 2019 | Lib 2026, 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm 
    • This workshop explores important email etiquette that is often overlooked, which can result in serious professional consequences. *Appropriate for all academic levels. 
  3. Designing an Effective Poster 
    • April 24, 2019 | Lib 2026, 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm 
    • This workshop will walk students through the poster creation process, from ideation, choosing a layout, visuals, content, to printing methods. Highly recommended for students who wish to participate in research conferences. *Appropriate for all academic levels.

  1. How to Conduct a Literature Search using the Sac State Library
    • Conducting a literature search for an original project can be challenging. How do you know if you’re searching in the right place? How do you know if you’re looking at the most important sources? Does the literature match the scope of your project? These are common questions all researchers ask. We have three discipline-specific workshops in cooperation with the University Library to help you learn how to navigate the library for online sources. Each workshop will be offered twice. You only need to attend one. Read below to find the workshop that best fits your discipline:
      1. Engaging Scholarly Literature in the Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) fields

        • Workshop: Participants will learn how to conduct more strategic and efficient searches, be able to engage with their peers, as well as have one-on-one consultations with a STEM librarian about your research project. 
      2. Engaging Scholarly Literature in the Social Sciences
        • October 15, 2018 | Lib 2023, 1:00 - 1:50 pm 
        • October 16, 2018 | Lib 2023, 1:00 - 1:50 pm
        • Workshop: Participants will learn how to conduct more strategic and efficient searches, be able to engage with their peers, as well as have one-on-one consultations with a Social Sciences librarian about your research project.
      3. Engaging Scholarly Literature in the Humanities

        • Workshop: Participants will learn how to conduct more strategic and efficient searches, be able to engage with their peers, as well as have one-on-one consultations with a Humanities librarian about your research project.

  2. How to Make a Poster

    • Workshop: Learn how to make an effective poster in order to communicate your research data. This workshop is recommended for students who are participating in the Provost's Student Research & Creative Activities Fall Forum 2018. 

  3. Introduction to Effective Communication
    • October 19, 2018 | Lib 2026, noon - 12:50 pm 
    • Workshop: Introduction to the importance of research communication and why it is important to build a story rather than reciting your results. Open to all disciplines. 

  4. Graduate Admissions 101 
    • October 19, 2018 | Lib 2026, 3:00 - 3:50 pm 
    • Workshop: Learn the differences between college and graduate school to determine if graduate school is for you. Learn what are the materials needed for applications and what can you do now to become competitive for admissions. 

  5. Fall Forum Q&A
    • October 25, 2018 | Lib 2026, noon - 12:30 pm
    • Information session: Fall Forum student participants meet with the SRC staff to answer questions about the event, including the logistics and presentation tips.

  6. Your Poster Session: Why You Shouldn't "Wing It"

    • Workshop: Learn how to prepare to present your poster to an audience.
