Updated: April 1, 2006

The Evolutionary Ecology of Fishes Laboratory has a number of resources available or accessible for use by graduate or undergraduate students wishing to do research.

1. Aquarium Room

We have a 12 x 14 foot aquarium room suitable for maintaining aquaria with tropical or temperate fishes. The room is equipped with an air supply, shelving, aquaria and large sink.

2. CSUS Fish and Herp Collections

The CSUS fish collection, part of the Museum of Ectothermic Vertebrates, is a small, but diverse collection of fishes, totalling some xx lots and xxx specimens. We also have a nice collection of herps.

3. CSUS MBIG facility

The Molecular Biology Interdisciplinary Group (MBIG) maintains a modern facility for molecular biology research. It is located in the basement of Sequoia Hall.

4. Boats and field vehicles

The Department of Biological Sciences has aluminum boats, various sizes of boat motors, a boat trailer and various field vehicles capable of towing the boats.

5. Natural Habitats

Located in the Central Valley of Northern California, numerous aquatic habitats are readily accessible. Freshwater habitats include the Lower American River (about 100 feet away) and Sacramento Rivers, home of numerous salmon runs, various other lakes and rivers and the Delta region. Marine habitats include San Francisco Bay, the area north of that (e.g. Bodega Marine Station), the area south of that (e.g., Monterey Bay, including the Moss Landing Marine Laboratory).

I do most of my field work in the New World tropics, Costa Rica in particular, but also Nicaragua, Mexico and Brazil. I strongly encourage students to do field work.
