EDTE 234
Curriculum and Staff Development with Technology

Forum: Staff Development Plan - First Draft
Assigned: 02/17/08
Due: Midnight 02/24/08

Introduction
Transformation is change that often sparks renewal. For the purpose of educational renewal, the course for Curriculum and Staff Development with Technology is focused on the need for Professional Development and effective presentation of Professional Development sessions.
As creators of professional development and as innovators in the integration of the use of computer technology with curriculum and instruction, you are all now in a leadership role (if you weren't already!).

"Real leadership means that you help direct the energy, you point the way, you inspire, you get people to do what they ought to do anyway."
--Hubert H. Humphrey

In this session, you will create a develop a research-based staff development training plan utilizing technology for other staff development professionals to use to deliver a training session.

Please complete the agenda by meeting online with your final project group members at a time of your own choosing. Schedule about two to three hours to complete the work.

Suggested timeline:
50 minutes: Begin group work (described below)
10 minutes: Take a Break
40-60 minutes continue discussion and finalize draft staff development plan.
Complete the draft plan and post the draft to the forum.
Due: Midnight 02/24/08

[There will be a follow-up forum activity after the next face-to face in which each person will review at least two other group's projects and give feedback according to final project description. Each group will then revise their staff development plan based on constructive peer feedback.]

Group Activity Description

For this assignment you will use Google docs and Skype (VoIP) to collaborate synchronously (online at the same time).

  • Select one person to create a Google Doc and Share it with all of your group members and ME jdibble@csus.edu. (You need their email addresses for this.)

  • Include the name, Skype username, and email address of everyone in your group at the top of the Google Doc.

  • Arrange a time to meet online with your EDTE 234 Final Project group using Skype Conference Call.

  • As a group, create a draft staff development plan for the final project.
Link to 'lesson plan' rubric. (For the rubirc, 'students' can be the teachers you are training or they can be 'students' in your classroom. Use which ever definition best fits your training scenario.)

  • Post the draft to the forum.

[Each group will make a short presentation (3-5 min.) to the class at the next face-to-face about their adventure(s) using Skype and Google Docs to collaborate online.]

I suggest you read the following Skype help guides:
Getting Started, Sign in, Add a Contact, Making a Call, Making a Conference Call, and Using Shared Groups.)

[If you do not have a microphone head set yet, you can use Skype chat, but it is not as much fun as talking on the phone over your computer!]

If you have any questions about this assignment, please email me.

Students will need an e-mail account and computer access to the Web. All Sacramento State students enrolled in one or more units can create a Sac Link account for e-mail. Although a home computer with Internet access running Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Netscape Navigator would be beneficial, students can access the Internet from one of the campus student labs. Check out System Check and Computer Hardware Recommendations for more information about equipment.
