Syllabus Spring 1999
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student is expected to
be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the
important contemporary changes in society and
the family, including changes in gender
roles.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the choices
that are available to family members.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the
stressors that many families face, including
economic and political constraints, such as
poverty, and discrimination based on social
class, race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual
orientation.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the
diversity of American families today,
particularly with regard to social class, race,
ethnicity, and various family forms.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills
regarding the many issues that confront the
modern family.
- Apply Family Studies and Behavioral Science
theoretical perspectives and research to the
issues facing families today.
- Demonstrate communication skills such as
poster and paper presentation (for the in-class
section only), literary review writing, and
professional etiquette (in person and on the
internet) as applied to Family Studies.
