Get to Know Me!

1. What do you like about teaching music?

What I enjoy most is watching students grow, express themselves, and experience the excitement of making music. I try to create a space where students feel comfortable sharing their progress, and I enjoy helping them realize that they have something valuable to contribute. One of my favorite moments is hearing the music come alive as the written notes turn into real sound and emotion.

2. What has surprised you most about your career in music?

I didn’t expect my career to expand into so many different areas. In addition to playing the trombone professionally, my career has evolved into a blend of teaching, leadership, and community service through music. Over time, teaching and mentoring young musicians have become a major part of my work, including decades as Director of Operations and Summer Music Camps at another four-year university. I also co-founded and currently serve as President and CEO of Music Mission San Francisco, a nonprofit after-school music education program that provides opportunities for underserved children in San Francisco’s Mission District.
