About Me
I am Professor Emeritus of Spanish at Sacramento State, where I’ve been part of the faculty since 2002. I earned my Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin, and have taught all levels of Spanish language and linguistics—including undergraduate courses in grammar and phonetics, and graduate seminars in dialectology, contrastive grammar, and historical linguistics.
My main area of research is Spanish Historical Linguistics. Over the years, I’ve published on the evolution of Spanish verbal morphology and contributed to broader studies in Romance linguistics. I co-authored the third edition of Bilingual Grammar of English-Spanish Syntax with Dr. Maria Mayberry, updating the late Prof. Sam Hill’s original text.
Study Abroad and International Programs
Promoting study abroad has always been central to my work. I’ve directed or co-directed multiple programs for the M.A. in Spanish Travel Study, including academic residencies in Peru, Mexico, Spain, and Guatemala. In 2011–2012, I served as Resident Director for the CSU International Programs in Spain (Madrid and Granada).
