Personal and Publications
I am Professor Emeritus of Spanish in the Department of World Languages and Literatures.
I received my PhD in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin. Since my arrival at CSUS in 2002, I have taught all levels of the Spanish language, including Advanced Spanish Grammar, Spanish Phonetics, Introduction to Language and Linguistics, and all four graduate seminars in linguistics for the MA program (General Spanish Linguistics, History of the Spanish Language, Contrastive Grammatical Structures of Spanish and English, and Applied Spanish Linguistics). My main field of expertise is Spanish Historical Linguistics.
Promoting study abroad has been very important to me since I first arrived in Sacramento. I have participated actively in the MA in Spanish Travel Study Program as professor (Peru 2003), co-director (Spain 2005 and 2012), and director (Mexico 2004 and 2008, Spain 2009, Guatemala 2010 and 2013, Peru 2011). In 2011-2012, I was also honored to be the Resident Director of the CSU International Programs in Spain (Madrid and Granada).
I have given scholarly presentations at the Annual Kentucky Foreign Language Conference at the University of Kentucky (Lexington, Kentucky, 2006) and the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, Michigan, 2005 and 2007). My articles include “The Spanish Future Perfect habré cantado: From Subjunctive to Indicative?” (Bulletin of Spanish Studies. 84.1:1-12. 2007) and “Defining the Spanish Future Subjunctive.” (Hispania. 91.2:495-509. 2008). I am also a contributor to the Cíbola Project of the Research Center for Romance Studies at the University of California Berkeley, which has published my Documents from the 1602-3 Sebastián Vizcaíno Expedition up the California Coast at http://escholarship.org/uc/rcrs_ias_ucb_cibola. Finally, I am a co-author, along with Dr. Maria Mayberry, of the 3rd edition of the late Prof. Sam Hill's text, Bilingual Grammar of English-Spanish Syntax (2014, University Press).
