Exam 1: Essay

ETHN 114: ANSWER BOTH  ALL of the questions and organize and label each paragraph as to what sections you are answering, that is, (A), (B), (C), etc. 

ESSAY: Chinese in New York and Peru: examining the social, political and economic context of Chinese global migration.

Please read Bernard Wong’s article “A Comparative Study of the Assimilation of the Chinese in New York City and Lima, Peru” (Comparative Studies in Society and History, Vol. 20, No. 3, July 1978 (downloadable from CSUS Library Database, use JSTOR). Note: from the Library Database, you must go to JSTOR (go to the "J" section of the Library's database). Then answer these questions.

  1. Describe the similarities and differences between the Chinese communities in New York and Peru. Give at least two factors in which they are similar and two in which they are different.

  3. Given what you’ve learned about Chinese in California as described in our lecture and by the article by Nancy Wey in our assigned readings (week #3), how do the Chinese in California compare to the Chinese in Peru and New York? What are the similarities and differences?

  4. Given what you learned about the Chinese in the Philippines, how do they compare with the Chinese in Peru and New York? What are the similarities and differences?

FORMAT
*For the entire essay, 500 words minimum, but NOT longer than 800 words.
TYPED and SINGLE-SPACED. Write in complete and coherent sentences—I do not want to see bullet points or “notes.” Indicate which section in your answer is (A), (B) and (C). Do a word count on your word processor and write the number of words in your essay. Type your essay and bring it to class on the day of the exam. Professor will collect the essays in the beginning of class. WRITE YOUR NAME at the BACK of the last page of your essay.

DUE: At beginning of scheduled exam day, turn in with objective exam.
