Detonation

The United States detonated a nuclear weapon on Tuesday with a yield equivalent to 150,000 tons of TNT, 40 miles from protesting peace activists, including 450 physicians.

The test was conducted 2,000 feet beneath the surface of Pahute Mesa in the Nevada desert, according to Department of Energy officials.

Explosion

Eight people were killed and 16 were injured in a fire that followed an explosion at a plastics factory in North Carolina Wednesday morning.

Airplane

Forty passengers were safely evacuated from a jet at the LaCrosse, Wis. Municipal Airport Monday after a landing tower employee spotted smoke near the wheels.

The smoke was caused when hydraulic fluids leaked on to hot landing brakes of Northwest Airlines Flight 428 from Minneapolis, according to Northwest spokesman Bob Gibbons.

Protest

Ten people were arrested outside Montwood High School on Thursday when a student protest turned into a rock and bottle-throwing melee that injured nearly 30 people.

Approximately 1,000 high school students walked out of class to protest changes in class schedules. Injuries ensued when students began attacking security personnel with rocks and glass bottles.
