Preparing for the competency exam

The exam will be given in Journalism 30 classes the week of May 3.

It will be a 60-minute, timed exercise in the same newswriting format you have been practicing. You will be allowed to bring, and use, your Associated Press Stylebook. You will not be able to share the stylebook during the test.

TO STUDY:

• Review the stories you've written and the comments on your graded work.

Are your leads solid?
Are you making repetitive mistakes?
Is your quote form correct?

Do you forget to spellcheck, proofread?
Do you have appropriate AP style memorized, or at least know how to look it up quickly?

• Practice the areas in which you think you need improvement.

• Do some exercises in the workbook and in your textbook. Then look up some sugggested solutions here -- but remember that there is often more than one correct way to approach the story.
