functioning in marriage and other partnerships,
parenting, work issues, domestic violence,
divorce, and remarriage. Focus on social issues
including gender, race, ethnicity, and class.
Historical and theoritical perspectives on
families in America. Introduction to research in
family sciences and public policy implications.
Lecture, discussion. Note: Not open for
credit to students who have taken SOC 005. 3

Personal Course Description:
Interpersonal and family development issues
will be discussed with emphasis on numerous
family topics in a multidimensional context.
Because this course approaches contemporary
social issues from the perspective of family
theory, research, and policy, it meets the
requirements for General Education Area D2
category. Because this course takes a special
look at the challenges to and strengths of
ethnic minority families, it meets the
requirements for the Race and Ethnicity in
American Society General Education category.
This course is designed to be worthwhile for
both the student who is considering entering the
Family Studies field and the student who must
take this course to graduate and has only a
passing interest in Family Studies.
