Nomenclature lists

The elements and ions you will be help responsible for this semester will be given to you in 4 chunks. You need to be able to go from symbol to name and vise versa. This means that you must know the names, symbols and (if applicable) the charges of everything on each list. The lists can be accessed by clicking the links to the left.

Electronic Flash Card

You MUST learn your nomenclature to have any hope of succeeding in chemistry! In order to help you do this, I have written an Excel spread sheet to help you study. It is essentially an infinite set of flash cards. In order to use you must first have access to Microsoft Excel. Click on the link to the left and save the file. Once you have saved the file to your computer, follow these instructions:

The two tabs you will be using are red and are called "Name to Formula" and "Formula to Name".  All you have to do is click on the button that says "CLICK ME" and it will give you 20 random chemicals.  You input your answer and it will tell you if you are correct or incorrect (you get more than one chance on each).  When you are done, click the "CLICK ME" box twice more for more exercise.  Make sure you practice both tabs.

    If you have a problem with the macro, do the following:

        open Excel
        go to the "Tools" menu then the "Macro" submenu and choose "Security..."
        in the dialogue box, pick "Medium.  You can choose whether or not to run potentially unsafe macros."
        click "OK"
        close Excel (you must do this)
        open the file I sent to you
        a dialogue should open up and give you 3 options: "Disable Macros", "Enable Macros", and "More Info"
        click on "Enable Macros"

That should make it work for you.  I promise that there are no harmful macros in the file, so don't worry.  Let me know if you have problems or questions.  I am fairly certain that this is compatible with old versions of excel, but not 100% sure.  Good luck!
