Galaxies And The Expansion Of The Universe
Between 1912 and 1928, Vesto M. Slipher
(1875 -1969) had taken many spectra of galaxies which showed that essentially all had redshifts (i.e., they were moving away from us!)
At about the same time, Edwin Hubble had determined the distance to many of these galaxies..
Hubble found that the farther away a galaxy was, the greater was its redshift!
Only a few, nearby galaxies (e.g., Andromeda), gravitationally influenced by the Local Group, deviated from this relation….
