Course Goals and Objectives

The objectives of this course are to prepare candidates to meet the new CCTC technology competencies for the Professional Level Credential (Level II).
Participants will use the current California State Academic standards and technology competencies as a guideline for the activities in this course. In addition to professional reading provided, the participants will be become acquainted with classrooms and schools where innovative technology has been implemented. Furthermore, participants will build their own Advanced Educational Technology Electronic Teaching Portfolio. The CSTP standards and CCTC technology competencies will serve as the organizational framework for this ePortfolio.


SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Each student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of current basic computer hardware and software terminology.
2. Demonstrate competency in the operation and care of computer related hardware.
3. Implement basic troubleshooting techniques for computer systems and related peripherals devices.
4. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the legal and ethical issues concerned with the use of computer-related technology.
5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the appropriate use of computer-based technology in teaching and learning.
6. Use computer applications to manage records.
7. Use computers to communicate through printed media.
8. Interact with other using e-mail.
9. Familiarize yourself with a variety of computer based collaborative tools.
10. Examine a variety of current educational digital media and uses established selection criteria to evaluate materials.
11. Choose software for its relevance, effectiveness, alignment with content standards, and value added to student learning.
12. Demonstrate competence in the use of electronic research tools.
13. Demonstrate the ability to assess the authenticity, reliability, and bias of the data gathered.
14. Identify student-learning styles and determine appropriate technological resources to improve learning.
15. Consider the content to be taught and select the best technological resource to support, manage, and enhance learning.
16. Demonstrate an ability to create and maintain effective learning environments using computer-based technology.
17. Analyze best practices and research findings on the use of technology and designs lessons accordingly.
18. Demonstrate knowledge of copyright issues.
19. Demonstrate knowledge of privacy, security, and safety issues.

Assignments

 STUDENT EVALUATION
Attendance and class participation (40%)
Attend all class sessions promptly and actively participate in class discussions in a courteous and professional manner. Each absence will result in loss of one final grade. Leaving early (twice) or showing up late for class (twice) will result in loss of one final grade. (e.q. A to B, or B+ to C+, etc).
Scoring/Grading: Percent scores translate to letter grades as follows: A(94+); A-(90+); B+(86-90); B(85-89); B-(81-84) C+(77-80).

Scoring/Grading: Percent scores translate to letter grades as follows: A(94+); A-(90+); B+(86-90); B(85-89); B-(81-84) C+(77-80).

Technology Requirements

Students will need an electronic mail account and computer access to the Web. All CSUS students enrolled in one or more units can create a SacLink account for electronic mail and Internet services. Although a home computer with a high speed modem running Netscape or Internet Explorer would be beneficial, students can use the Web from one of the campus student labs.

Computing Recommendations

You should be comfortable using a computer and willing to browse the Web. This class requires online class participation on the Web assignments and electronic discussions.

You need:

  • Macintosh compatible with System 9 or 10 (OS X) or higher or Windows compatible Pentium running Windows 98 or XP.
  • 128 MB of RAM
  • 56K modem or faster connection
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or Netscape 6 (or higher)
  • SacLink or other Internet Account
  • Word processing skills
