Sac State's Commitment

Create true sense of belonging

President Robert S. Nelsen

A Message from the President

In fall 2016, I announced four imperatives around which we as a University would focus. One of those imperatives was to commit ourselves to being not just a diverse campus but also an inclusive campus that fosters a sense of belonging for everyone at Sacramento State.

We cannot merely rest on our laurels as one of the most diverse student bodies in the country; we must strive to create a caring community that values the variety of lived experiences that exist among the entire Hornet Family.

I believe that diversity and inclusion are fundamental to our mission as an academic institution. We have a moral obligation to ensure that all sectors of society have access to an excellent education. Excellence requires diversity of perspectives, experiences, cultures, and ideas, and excellence cannot be achieved without representation that reflects the communities in which we live.

It is critical that our students have the opportunity to see themselves reflected in those individuals who are teaching, leading, and serving them.

Equity, social justice, inclusion, and transparency will be the hallmarks of our success in the years to come. We must be committed to creating an environment of belonging where everyone can be authentic and feel that their ideas and views are heard and recognized.

I am proud that we have countless people on our campus who have been doing outstanding work in diversity and inclusion throughout their careers. We are blessed to have their guidance and expertise as we work to become a truly inclusive campus.

I hope that you will enjoy the Spring edition of Sac State Magazine.
Sacramento State is in a time of transition and transformation, and I hope that you will consider joining us as we work to create a campus climate that is welcoming as we learn to understand everyone’s opinions, beliefs, ideas, culture, and experience. Stingers Up!

Sincerely,
Robert S. Nelsen
President
