Student Confidentiality

securityPrivacy and information security are top priorities for Sacramento State. In fact, we are bound by law to keep specific data about your child confidential, including information related to academics and health care.

Academic Information (FERPA)

Go To FERPA Website

FERPA is an acronym for the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act of 1974, a federal law that regulates student records, and what student information can and cannot be released by universities.

What this means for parents: Sacramento State and its employees cannot release specific academic information to you about your daughter or son unless certain terms and conditions have been met. This includes information about course enrollment, grades, academic standing, and so forth. FERPA violations can result in penalties for the University.

Students can waive FERPA rights by completing a release form. Download it here .

Please talk with your son or daughter about the pros and cons of having him or her sign a release form that allows University officials to speak with others about his or her private academic information. Learn more about FERPA and what it means for you and your son or daughter at Sacramento State  here , or from the federal government  here .

Health Information (HIPAA)

Go To HIPAA Website

HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, is a federal mandate that requires colleges and universities, as well as other institutions and organizations, to keep student health information private and confidential.

If a student wants his parents to have access to his medical care records, the student must submit written authorization to the health center.
