The University Animal Care and Use Committee acts under the direction of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Committee composition includes: three faculty members from departments utilizing animals in teaching and/or research, one faculty member from a department in which animals are not used in teaching and/or research, a graduate student from an animal-using department, and a community member not affiliated with the University; ex-officio members include the Vice President for Academic Affairs or designee(s), Dean of Natural Sciences and Math or designee, Chair of Biological Sciences, and the campus consulting veterinarian.

The Committee's charge is to review and approve all applications for University teaching and research animal use. The Committee shall inspect animal facilities, assist the animal user in establishing appropriate protocols and coordinate compliance with applicable regulations.

The primary responsibility for compliance with Committee decisions rests with the appropriate department chair.

The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S;) Office supports the Committee's activities and is the custodian of its files.
