Encampment on Campus

The University has extended its approval for the encampment

UPDATE May 1, 2024 - University officials have clarified that the approval has been extended for a week, until midnight on Wednesday, May 8. If the encampment remains peaceful and within University policy, further extensions may be possible.

April 30, 2024 - We continue to remain in regular contact with the students and community members who have formed an encampment in the Library Quad in support of Palestine, and communication has been open and transparent.

The University has extended its approval for the encampment, which originally had a deadline of midnight on Wednesday, May 1, and the approval is planned to be extended as long as the encampment stays peaceful and within the University’s Time, Place & Manner Restrictions on Speech and Speech-Related Activities policy.

On Monday night, campus police were contacted by students after they caught non-encampment students vandalizing University property. Police cited and released three students for vandalism. The damage was minor.

The campus remains open and classes are in session. Timely updates will be provided at csus.edu/alert.

President's update on active free speech demonstration on campus

April 29, 2024 - This morning, a group of students and community members created an encampment in the Library Quad as part of a free speech demonstration. As a public university, we are committed to creating and fostering safer conditions to support student engagement in constitutionally protected activities. Campus remains open and fully operational.

Sacramento State's Time, Place & Manner Restrictions on Speech and Speech-Related Activities policy establishes rules that allow for free expression while promoting safety and avoiding interference with the University's normal operations. We regularly work with students to ensure that they understand how to engage in free speech activities without violating this policy.

We are currently focused on ensuring that campus remains safe, and that instruction and other critical operations can continue. Staff and faculty can direct questions or concerns to their department and division managers. Students can direct questions or concerns to Dean of Students Bill Hebert at 916-278-6060.

We will communicate updates to the campus community as necessary. Thank you for all that you do to keep one another safe.

Dr. Luke Wood
President, Sacramento State
