EDTE 234
Curriculum and Staff Development with Technology

Evaluating Staff Development

Introduction

At the EDTE 234 final face-to-face meeting, each group will deliver a 30 minute presentation to the Staff Development Committee (SDC), consisting of a 5 minute overview and a 25 minute illustrative example of the actual training. The audience (class members and instructor) play the role of the SDC. The main task of SDC is to evaluate the staff development proposal and to provide written critical feedback for both the proposal and the presentation.
The purpose of this assignment is to assist in the development the fundamental concepts of staff development evaluation. Link to Final Project description.

Discussion Objectives

Each group summarizes their assigned reading and creates a digital record of their discusson using a format of their choice.

Use Yugma-Skype sofware to present your group's summary.
(We will pretend that we are not at a face to face meeting but instead are all at different locations. )

  • What are the most important criteria for a successful staff development presentation?
  • List and describe in detail at least five criteria, in priority order, from most important to least important.

Again, the purpose of this assignment is to provide some fundamental ideas related to the evaluation of staff development programs or presentations. While we may not use or apply all of the guidelines or steps mentioned for the final evaluations, these readings provide background information to help guide your thinking as you develop your own presentation and prepare to evaluate the presentations of other students at the final face to face.

Groups and Roles:

  • Facilitator: host the meeting in your Yugma-Skype location, keep the group on task and on topic, and help to ensure that all group members have a chance to be a part of the discussion.
  • Timekeeper: keep the group on time and aid the facilitator in ensuring that all members have a chance to be a part of the discussion.
  • Recorder: take notes during the discussion and prepare the summary.
  • Evaluator-critic: measures group's actions against an objective standard.

Students will need an e-mail account and computer access to the Web. All Sacramento State students enrolled in one or more units can create a SacLink account for e-mail. Although a home computer with Internet access running Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Netscape Navigator would be beneficial, students can access the Internet from one of the campus student labs. Check out System Check and Computer Hardware Recommendations for more information about equipment.
