Chair Stipends and Salary Calculations
Stipends
Department chairs receive a stipend that has two components: a flat monthly amount, as described in Article 31.27 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and an additional percentage increase based on the department chair administrative fraction.
Flat monthly amount: Effective 2023, employees serving as department chair in class codes 2481 and 2482 shall receive a minimum stipend of $160, and for those chairpersons of departments of eighteen (18) or more full-time equivalent faculty, the minimum stipend shall be $240. These amounts are minimums and campuses may provide larger stipends.
Additional percentage increase based on the department chair administrative fraction:
- 12-month department chairs (2481) will receive an additional 4.5% of the salary attributed to department chair administrative duties
Salary Calculations
Use the 12-month Department Chair Calculator as a quick way to find your department chair salary. For AY Chair calculations, please contact OFA. See below for an explanation of how calculations are done for each type of department chair.
12-month, full-time Chairs:
To establish the compensation for a 12-month chair with an administrative timebase fraction of 1.0, convert the AY salary (if applicable) in the instructional position to 12-mo by adding 15%, apply the administrative fraction of 4.5% to the monthly salary, and add the flat monthly rate.
Example: Tenure-track/tenured faculty AY salary is $10,000 per month. Chair timebase is 1.0. Article 31.27 flat rate stipend is $160.
- 12-month salary: instructional salary x 15%
- $10,00 x 1.15 = $11,500
- Chair administrative fraction: 12 mo. salary x 4.5%
- $11,500 x 0.045 = $517.50
- Chair flat monthly rate: $160
- Total chair compensation: admin fraction + flat rate
- $517.50 + $160 = $677.50
- New salary: 12 mo. salary + total chair compensation
- $11,500 + $677.50 = $12,177.50
12-month, split chairs:
For 12-month chairs (less than 1.0 timebase) with a concurrent AY instructional faculty appointment, the base salary for the chair appointment must include the additional 15% provided when converting to 12 months, the 4.5% administrative fraction adjusted by timebase, and the flat monthly rate. The chair compensation is then added to the instructional salary, which is also adjusted by base.
Example: Instructional faculty AY salary (class code 2360) is $10,000 per month. Article 31.27 flat rate stipend is $160.
New concurrent appointments will be in classes 2481 (12 mo. chair at a 0.6 time-base) and 2360 (instructional AY faculty at 0.4 time-based). New base salary for the 12-month chair appointment will be:
Chair Compensation (2481)
- 12-month salary: instructional salary x 15%
- $10,000 x 1.15 = $11,500
- Adjusted 12-mo. salary based on timebase:
- $11,500 x .6 = $6,900
- Chair administrative fraction of 4.5%:
- $6,900 x .045 = $310.50
- Chair flat monthly rate: $160
- Total chair compensation: admin fraction + flat rate + chair monthly rate adjusted by timebase
- $6,900 + $310.50 + $160 =$7,370.50
Instructional Compensation (2360)
- AY instructional monthly salary x timebase
- $10,000 x .4 = $4,000
Total Employee Compensation
- Chair compensation + instructional compensation
- $4,000 + $7,370.50 = $11,370.50
AY, Split chairs:
If you have an AY Split Chair contact OFA. For AY chairs (less than 1.0 timebase) with a concurrent AY instructional faculty appointment, determine the base salary for the chair appointment, which must include the 7% administrative fraction and the flat rate. This chair compensation is then added to the instructional salary, which is also adjusted by timebase.
Example: Instructional faculty AY salary (class code 2360) is $10,000 per month. Article 31.27 flat rate stipend is $160. Concurrent appointments will be in classes 2482 (AY Chair with a 0.60 timebase) and 2360 (instructional AY faculty with a 0.4 timebase).
Chair Compensation (2482)
- Adjusted AY salary based on timebase:
- $10,000 x .6 = $6,000
- Chair administrative fraction of 7%:
- $6,000 x .07 = $252
- Chair flat monthly rate: $160
- Total Chair Compensation: Adjusted AY salary + admin fraction + flat rate
- $6,000 + $252 + $160 = $6,412
Instructional Compensation (2360)
- AY salary x timebase:
- $10,000 x .4 = $4,000
Total employee compensation
- Chair compensation + instructional compensation
- $6,412 + $4,000 = $10,412
