Janie Mutchler, Emergency Manager

janie-mutcler.jpgJanie was Made at Sac State, having graduated in 2010 with a B.S. in Health Science with a concentration in Occupational Health and Safety. She was a Sac State Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) intern before graduating and was able to get a job with the Risk Management office as the Risk Management Analyst after she graduated. For 5 years, Janie was the Risk Management Analyst working with the Risk Manager on Business Continuity Plans, approving insurance for vendors working on campus, coordinating the driver's on-campus program, providing training, creating online training, and was the learning management system (LMS) administrator. She served on the START committee and University Staff Assembly (USA) for the university. During this time, Janie was also the Secretary/Treasurer for the local Public Agency Risk Management Association (PARMA) chapter. She helped organize meetings and sponsorships and helped in the bigger association's annual conference. A new position opened up at EHS and she became the Training/Occupational Safety Specialist. Here, her main focus was on compliance training and creating and maintaining online training. She continued to be the LMS administrator until we moved to CSU Learn. She got certified to train in First Aid/CPR/AED to help the department save money and allow more people on campus to take this training. Janie was able to get publicly accessible AEDs all over campus. She was the fire marshal liaison for events and inspections. Along with University Events, she started the Event Notification Form as part of working with the fire marshals to make sure our events are following fire and life safety regulations. The form is now used for more than fire marshal needs. During the pandemic, Janie coordinated receiving/purchasing PPE, assisted with desk shields (providing portables and approving installs), and delivered COVID-19 PPE orders for the campus. She worked with our campus event planners a lot during the pandemic to keep employees and guests safe for our events. Her position in USA changed from staff representative to Vice President, where she was VP for about 4 years until she could no longer be part of the assembly. Janie was in this position for 7 years. A new position opened up in Risk Management and she became the university's first official Emergency Manager. She manages the Emergency Operations Center, emergency management programs, and the Business Continuity Program. She kept the First Aid/CPR/AED training program and the fire marshals' special event permit for our large events. She has been on campus for a total of 13 years.

Fun Fact: Janie lives on a farm with her 2 indoor cats and a dog. She also has 100 chickens. She has about a dozen laying hens and another dozen she keeps as pets (mostly Hmong chicken and Red Jungle Fowl). The rest are raised for meat. Janie could talk about chickens and farm living all day!

Tyler Harris, Director

tyler-harris.jpgTyler joined the Hornet family in 2018, providing campus-wide support for Employee Health and Safety. In his time on campus, EH&S has consistently been ranked among the top 3 CSUs in terms of campus employee injury/incident rates, working hand in hand with departments providing hands-on safety training, safety consultation, and campus-wide safety program development. Tyler and his team work daily to provide the Hornet Community with positive resources to further enhance and enrich the academic and administrative missions of Sacramento State.

Fun Fact: Tyler once held an internship where projects could not start until he completed 1 minute of juggling 3 objects. It took him almost a week of daily practice before he could start working for the company.
