Sacramento State Clery Geography

Sacramento State Geographical Areas

Crime statistics are reported pursuant to the guidelines specified in The Jeanne Clery Act, which
uses the definitions under the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting procedures and separated by the
following geographical areas:

  • On-campus: any building or property owned or controlled by the University within the
    same reasonably contiguous geographic area.
  • On-campus Student Housing: on-campus residential facilities for students. Please note that the statistics reported in this category are a subset of those reported in the “On-campus” category (i.e., a crime that occurred at an on-campus residential facility for students is reported in both the “On-campus” and “On-campus Residential” categories).
  • Non-campus: any building or property owned or controlled by a student organization that
    is officially recognized by the institution; or any building or property owned or controlled
    by the University that is used in direct support of, or in relation to, the University’s
    educational purposes, is frequently used by students, and is not within the same
    reasonably contiguous geographic area of the University.
  • Public Property: all public property—including parks, thoroughfares, streets, sidewalks, and
    parking facilities—that is within the campus or immediately adjacent to and accessible
    from the campus.

On-campus Geography

(1) Any building or property owned or controlled by an institution within the same reasonably contiguous geographic area and used by the institution in direct support of, or in a manner related to, the institution’s educational purposes, including residence halls; and (2) Any building or property that is within or reasonably contiguous to the area identified in paragraph (1) of this definition, that is owned by the institution but controlled by another person, is frequently used by students, and supports institutional purposes (such as a food or other retail vendor). State ownership constitutes control for state institutions.

Controlled by means that your institution (or an institution-associated entity as described below) directly or indirectly rents, leases or has some other type of written agreement (including an informal one, such as a letter or an e-mail) for use of a building or property, or a portion of a building or property. Even if there is no payment involved in the transaction, for Clery Act purposes, a written agreement for the use of space gives your institution control of that space for the time period specified in the agreement.

  • All buildings on campus that are not indentified as a Residence Hall
  • All other outdoor areas on campus (e.g. Library quad, parking lots and garages, grassy areas, Hornet Stadium, etc.)
  • Outdoor areas directly around Residence Halls (e.g. areas in front of housing buildings, parking lots)

On-campus Student Housing Facilities

Any student housing facility that is owned or controlled by the institution, or is located on property that is owned or controlled by the institution, and is within the reasonably contiguous geographic area that makes up the campus is considered an on-campus student housing facility (Official Greek chapter houses OWNED by the University within a mile of campus fall here)

Reasonably contiguous refers to a building or property your institution owns or controls that’s in a location that you and your students consider to be, and treat as, part of your campus.

    • Desmond Hall
    • Draper Hall
    • Jenkins Hall
    • Sierra Hall
    • Sutter Hall
    • Riverview Hall
    • Mt. Whitney Hall (coming soon!)
  • Hornet Commons:
    • Aspen (A)
    • Birch (B)
    • Cedar (C)
    • Spruce (D)
    • Cypress (E)
    • Alder (F)

Non-campus Geography

Any building or property owned or controlled by a student organization that is officially recognized by the institution; or any building or property owned or controlled by an institution that is used in direct support of, or in relation to, the institution’s educational purposes, is frequently used by students, and is not within the same reasonably contiguous geographic area of the institution. (Official Greek chapter houses that are OWNED BY THE CHAPTER or other official Student Organization owned residential properties fall here)

  • Aquatics Center
  • Folsom Hall
  • Julia Morgan House
  • S Street Building (Downtown property)
  • Project Rebound Housing
  • Ramona Lot (when in use)
  • Most location sites used by campus groups such as Athletic teams, and other class groups (e.g. field trips) where they stayed at least one night in the same location more than 1 year in a row. May include hotels, campgrounds, etc.
  • Gymnastics Practice Facility, 6005 Folsom Blvd, Sacramento. Building in which facility is housed is owned by UEI.
  • Flawless Boxing, 600 Broadway, Sacramento. Used by the Combat U student athlete teams to practice for their sport on a regular basis.
  • Alpha Phi Sorority house, 2223 K Street, Sacrmaento. Alpha Phi is a recognized student organization and Sac State controls this property.

Public Property

All public property, including thoroughfares, streets, sidewalks, and parking facilities, that is within the campus, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

  • American River Bike Path
  • Guy West Bridge
  • Folsom Hall sidewalks
  • Benches around Buildings: although on-campus, still considered public property
  • Streets Located on Campus: although run through the campus proper, still considered public property

Separate Campus

Sacramento State currently has no properties that are considered as a separate campus.

Not Sacramento State Clery Geography

Property that may be utilized by Sac State students, staff, and faculty, but is not owned or controlled by Sacramento State. Crimes which occur in these locations are not included in the campus' statistics.

  • CARES Rapid Rehousing Locations
  • Bright Path Learning Child Development Center
  • Nine-Ten Place: temporary faculty and staff housing
  • Uriah Farber’s Ultimate Fitness - Used by Combat U student athletes for strength and conditioning on a drop-in basis whenever they need; no formal schedule.
  • DFSCA Prison Programs
  • McClure House - House is owned and controlled by a group of alumni who rent only to Sac State students.
  • Off-campus apartment complexes or hotels (although they could be if contracted by Sacramento State and used as temporary housing for students in a program or relocated to their on a temporary basis due to maintenance occurring in their regular on-campus housing unit)
